The Vision 21 Gift Shop was started to display and sell the quality craft work produced in the Vision 21 workshops. It is also provides realistic vocational training in retail skills to Vision 21 students who wish to learn about working in a shop environment.

Some of the many products that are sold in the shop include:

Hand built stoneware ceramics and hand made tiles from Fairwater Pottery
Hand made wooden furniture, planters and bird products from Fieldway & Skomer workshops (catalogue of products in the shop)
Hand made Vision 21 cards for all occasions in Welsh and English
Hand made Vision 21 recycled bead jewellery

The gift shop also sells bought in fair-trade gifts & gift wrap as well as craft supplies.
The shop is friendly and supportive, providing students an ideal opportunity to develop confidence in retail skills. We encouraging students to think for themselves, to use the till, to handle money and to communicate with, and serve customers who come into the shop.

Student Training

We will work with students to develop an Individual Training Plan (ITP) this could include skills such as:

Serving customers and handling cash
Working with money & using a calculator
Pricing & labelling goods for sale
Restocking shelves and other product display areas
Assisting in cashing-up, record keeping and banking
Customer care
Making and receiving telephone calls
Assisting with stock orders
Stock taking
Cleaning and tidying the shop
Changing seasonal window displays
Card and craft making skills

Accreditation

Students in the Vision 21 Gift Shop are also able to work towards Agored Cymru certificates in retail and related skills at entry level and level one.

Soft Skills Development

The training at The Vision 21 Gift Shop also delivers the Vision 21 Soft Skills Personal Development programme. In addition to developing retail and card making skills the training focuses on developing confidence, communication skills, self care and presentation, working as part of a team, motivation, timekeeping, behaviour and reliability amongst others.

To refer a student to the Vision 21 Gift Shop

Following satisfactory completion of the referral process the student will undergo an induction to Vision 21 after which a ‘taster’ day will be offered to see whether the opportunity suits them. If this goes well students can attend the Vision 21 Gift Shop for one or two days per week, occasionally more if appropriate, for an agreed time scale which will be reviewed regularly.

Health and Safety

Students in the Gift Shop receive a Health and Safety induction including Risk Assessments, Manual Handling and Fire Safety Awareness. Students can also be referred to our TAM project for additional life skills, employment and independent living guidance as appropriate.
