The Vision 21 Creative Choices & Card making project

 Creative Choices

The Vision 21 Creative Choices project offers a more therapeutic option for the growing number of students with more complex learning and physical needs as well as opening up more creative options for more able students with a range of learning disabilities in the Cardiff area. Some of these ranges may be suitable for older people with learning needs with early onset dementia and will offer real community engagement.

The Creative Choices project is currently working on developing a range of programmes out in the community. The aim is to offer a range of quality options including shorter 3 hour sessions including built in breaks to encourage social interaction with peers. Learners will have the opportunity to learn new practical, creative, social and personal skills.

The aims:

  • To offer a range of creative opportunities for current and new learners.
  • To develop therapeutic options for learners with more challenging/coplex needs and problems with associated with ageing.
  • To provide a safe environment for learners to build social links.
  • To promote autonomy and choice.

Workshops will be led by experienced tutors and will be able to explore their chosen creative pathway.

 Card making

Card making is located in our Fieldway site and gives learners the opportunity to work in a real social enterprise work environment creating hand made cards for sale.

Student Training

Students in the card project learn to make and package hand made cards for all occasions in both Welsh and English. We will work with you to develop an Individual Training Plan to suit your ability (ITP) this could include skills such as:
  • Using a paper trimmer to cut card to size
  • Folding card
  • Cutting embellishments
  • Methods of fixing embellishments
  • Applying adhesive labels
  • Packaging cards for sale
  • Counting and packaging products for sale
  • Using a computer to format greetings text

Soft Skills Development

The training in the card project provides places for students of widely differing abilities. It is an ideal project for delivering the Vision 21 soft skills development programme. In addition to developing card making skills the training focuses on developing confidence, communication skills, self care and presentation, working as part of a team, motivation, timekeeping, behaviour and reliability amongst others.

To refer a student to the Vision 21 Card making project

Following satisfactory completion of the referral process the student will undergo an induction to Vision 21 after which a ‘taster’ day will be offered to see whether the opportunity suits them. If this goes well students can attend the Card Project for one or two days per week, occasionally more if appropriate, for an agreed time scale which will be reviewed regularly.
For more information on our referral process please see our referral page.

Health and Safety

Students in the Card Project receive a health and safety induction including, manual handling, Risk Assessment and fire safety awareness. Students can also be referred to our TAM project for additional life skills, employment and independent living guidance as appropriate.
