Cefn Mably Farm

Cefn Mably Farm is a 12 acre site which is home to a wide variety of animals, including a number of rare breeds and is open 7 days a week to the general public from 10am until 5pm. The farm also rescues abandoned and unwanted animals and provides homes for them at the same time as giving people the opportunity to visit and interact with them in any weather throughout the year.

Cefn Mably farm provides Vision 21 student’s who attend the enterprise with an increasingly rare opportunity to meet, interact with and help care for, a large variety of friendly farm animals throughout the year. The farm park provides a range of interactive opportunities in a safe supportive and enjoyable atmosphere.

New facilities at the farm include:

  • All-weather heated play barn
  • Coffee shop & restaurant
  • Conservation areas
  • Undercover animal viewing areas
  • A children’s play area
  • Two function rooms

The Farm boasts a large new education centre opened in August 2006. This helps Vision 21 to make full use of the setting as a training project throughout the year.

Vision 21 is a member of the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens.

What you will learn

Students at Cefn Mably learn to look after and handle animals at the farm.  They also prepare feed and give water to animals, to clean out stalls and hutches, change bedding, walk dogs and interact with the animals around them. Through this gentle teaching approach, Basic Skills development in Numeracy and Literacy can be gained, often where other, more traditional approaches may not have been successful for the individual learner.

Training and accreditation

An Individual Training Plan (ITP) is developed for each student, this includes skills such as:

  • Animal husbandry
  • Environmental conservation
  • Tourism and leisure
  • Basic  Numeracy and Literacy

Soft Skills Development

Working with animals can be very helpful for students who have difficulty with social and communication skills and can help people to gain confidence.

This project is ideally suited to the delivery of our soft skills development programme. In addition to working with animals the training focuses on developing confidence, interpersonal skills, and communication skills, working as part of a team and using your own initiative, amongst others.

To refer a student to Cefn Mably Farm

Following satisfactory completion of the referral process the student will undergo an induction to Vision 21 after which a ‘taster’ day will be offered to see whether the opportunity suits them. If this goes well students can attend Cefn Mably for one or two days per week, occasionally more if appropriate, for an agreed time scale which will be reviewed regularly.

For more information on our referral process please see our referral page.

Health & Safety

Students at Cefn Mably receive a Health and Safety induction including safe use of tools and equipment, Risk Assessments, manual handling and fire safety awareness. Students can also be referred to our TAM project for additional life skills, employment and independent living guidance as appropriate.
