A La Carte (At Rookwood Hospital)

Based at Rookwood Hospital ‘A La Carte’ accommodates two to three students per day providing a valuable service to both in patients, out patients, relatives and staff of the hospital in a realistic work setting.



The café serves:
  • Salads and light meals & snacks
  • Baguettes & sandwiches
  • Hot and cold drinks
  • Buffets

Student Training

The students at A La Carte learn to prepare a range of salads and light lunches as well as serving customers and providing a buffet service when required.

Students have the opportunity to gain confidence in working with the general public. The café is a supportive environment to learn in. Great emphasis is placed on building self esteem and social skills as well as learning catering skills.



An Individual Training Plan (ITP) is developed for each student, this includes skills such as:
  • Food preparation
  • Making up sandwiches & baguettes
  • Undertake, maintain and practice basic food hygiene
  • Set tables
  • Present and serve food
  • Use kitchen equipment proficiently/ oven, microwave, toaster, and others 
  • Clean the kitchen and kitchen equipment
  • Defrost and clean refrigerator/ freezer
  • Wash up
  • Maintain, clean and wear kitchen uniform
  • Use a till and handle money
  • Serve customers and customer care.

Accreditation

Students at A La Carte are able to undertake Agored Cymru accredited training in catering and related skills. They are also taken through basic food hygiene awareness and encouraged to take their basic food hygiene certificate when ready to do so.

Soft Skills Development

The training at A La Carte also delivers the Vision 21 Soft Skills Personal Development programme. In addition to developing catering skills the training focuses on developing confidence, interpersonal skills, communication skills, working as part of a team, motivation, timekeeping, behaviour and reliability, amongst others.

Health & Safety

Students at A La Carte receive a Health and Safety induction including, manual handling and fire safety awareness. Students can also be referred to our TAM project for additional life skills, employment and independent living guidance as appropriate.

To refer a student to Vision 21

Following satisfactory completion of the referral process the student will undergo an induction to Vision 21 after which a ‘taster’ day will be offered to see whether the opportunity suits them. If this goes well students can attend A La Carte for one or two days per week, occasionally more if appropriate, for an agreed time scale which will be reviewed regularly.

Nibblets Buffet Service
